The Ayurvedic Formulary of India lists specific Mandoor-containing preparations with defined compositions. The shodhana of Mandoor is a multi-step wet purification process that removes impurities and prepares the mineral for use in compound preparations. The classical Ayurvedic formulation logic distinguishes between contexts that call for Lauha Bhasma and contexts that call for Mandoor.
For a brand owner or distributor, this means that a formulation specifying Mandoor should contain Mandoor, and one specifying Lauha Bhasma should contain Lauha Bhasma. Substituting one for the other without pharmacopoeial authority is a formulation deviation and a Schedule T compliance issue.
The most widely recognised Mandoor-containing formulations in the GMP manufacturing sector include Mandoor Vataka, which uses shodhita Mandoor as its principal mineral ingredient and is specified in the Ashtanga Hridayam; Punarnava Mandoor, which combines Mandoor with Punarnava (Boerhavia diffusa) and a range of additional herbal ingredients; and Navayasa Mandoor and related compound preparations recorded in the Bhaishajya Ratnavali.
